Card Values and How Deadwood Is Calculated

Every unmatched card in your hand at the end of a Tongits round carries a point penalty. Number cards are worth their face value — a 7 of spades costs you 7 points. Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) each carry 10 points, and the Ace is worth 1. When a player calls a draw or another player goes Tongits, everyone reveals their

remaining unmelded cards and adds up those values. The player with the lowest total deadwood count takes the round. If you go Tongits — emptying your hand completely — no counting is needed; you win outright regardless of what others hold.

What is deadwood in Tongits?

Deadwood refers to cards still in your hand that are not part of any meld. Their face values are added together to give your total penalty score at round end.

What does 'Tongits' mean as a win condition?

Going Tongits means you have discarded or melded every card in your hand. It is an outright win — no deadwood count is needed because you hold nothing at all.

A Fight is called when a player challenges a Draw declaration. All active players reveal their hands; the one with the lowest deadwood total wins the Fight and the round.

Tongits Scoring Rules — What Players Ask

When a Draw is declared and no one calls a Fight, the declaring player wins if their deadwood count is lower than all remaining players. Ties go to the declaring player under standard Filipino rules.

Under the standard Tongits ruleset we apply, if a Fight results in a tie, the player who called the Fight wins the round. A tied Draw goes to the player who declared it.

A player draws one card per turn from the stock pile or the discard pile. There is no cap on total draws per round — you keep drawing on each of your turns until the round ends.

If the stock pile runs out before any player goes Tongits or calls a Draw, the round ends automatically. All players reveal remaining cards and the lowest deadwood total takes the win.
